Law360 (subscription) has published an in-depth profile on Lieff Cabraser as part of its recognition of the firm as a 2024 “Class Action Law Practice Group of the Year.” The firm’s sole focus is plaintiff-side class actions and other forms of mass litigation, a dedication that has defined its 50-plus year history. These most recent victories reflect Lieff Cabraser’s commitment to using class action litigation to secure meaningful change for communities, consumers, and workers alike. The piece highlights the firm’s success in securing several high-profile settlements, including a groundbreaking settlement over the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment and toxic spill, as well as major victories in cutting-edge online privacy cases.
Among the firm’s most notable achievements, Law360 spotlights Lieff Cabraser’s role as co-counsel in a series of class actions against Meta Platforms Inc. and several media companies accused of sharing users’ viewing habits without consent. The settlements, finalized between March and July 2024, included agreements with AMC Networks, FloSports Inc., and Epoch Times, which committed to removing tracking tools and deleting user data.
Lieff Cabraser also secured a $115 million settlement in a landmark data privacy class action against Oracle, accusing the tech giant of engaging in a sweeping data collection scheme affecting hundreds of millions of people. The deal received final approval in November 2024 and stands as an early but critical victory in the evolving landscape of online privacy law. Lieff Cabraser partner Elizabeth Cabraser, who served as co-counsel on the Oracle and Meta-related cases, commented on the importance of the settlements, stating:
“We’re all exposed every second of the day, despite best efforts and despite the law. This is an early example of how we are really trying to stay not only abreast of, but ahead of the curve, and to protect privacy rights to try to change corporate culture so that all of the new high-tech brave new world of technology remembers that it is still serving human beings.”
The firm also received national attention for leading a $600 million class action settlement against Norfolk Southern, providing long-term medical monitoring for residents impacted by the East Palestine derailment and toxic spill. “The community was deeply invested in rectifying the situation, and long-term care was a crucial component of the resolution,” Cabraser emphasized.
Additionally, Law360 highlighted Lieff Cabraser’s unique $122 million settlements in cases involving major retailers accused of falsely marketing coffee as originating from Hawaii’s Kona region. The settlements not only compensated affected farmers but also required future compliance, ensuring only genuine Kona coffee would be marketed going forward.
“These farmers were instrumental in guiding our understanding of what a meaningful resolution looked like,” said Lieff Cabraser partner Jason Lichtman, lead counsel in the Kona coffee litigation. “Their focus was on securing future fairness for their community.”
Lieff Cabraser’s commitment to long-term impact is also reflected in its work on a historic $215 million gender discrimination settlement against Goldman Sachs. The firm served as co-lead counsel in the 13-year battle, culminating in what is believed to be the largest-ever pre-trial gender discrimination settlement in U.S. history.
