As reported by Law360, University of California researchers have asked a federal judge to preliminarily approve a proposed settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that would resolve the EPA-related claims in their ongoing class action challenging the Trump administration’s abrupt termination of federally funded research grants.
Under the proposed settlement, the EPA has agreed not to terminate or suspend funding for 24 covered research grants overseen by about 35 researchers. Eligible grants would also receive no-cost extensions to help account for time lost during the funding disruptions. This comes after earlier court victories in the broader litigation involving grants from other federal agencies, including a preliminary injunction restoring terminated federal research grants and later relief requiring the reinstatement of grants the government had sought to suspend.
