The California Daily Journal’s 2024 CLAY award recognizes Lieff Cabraser and Girard Sharp for their collective efforts in securing landmark settlements from JUUL and Altria, highlighting those companies’ role in fueling the youth vaping epidemic

We are proud to announce that the California Daily Journal/California Lawyer has selected a team of lawyers from Lieff Cabraser and Girard Sharp as co-recipients of a 2024 “California Lawyer of the Year” (CLAY) award for their significant achievements in the JUUL Labs Inc. Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation. This recognition follows their collective efforts, resulting in nearly $2 billion in settlements from Altria (formerly Phillip Morris) and JUUL, holding them accountable for their contribution to the rise in youth nicotine addiction.

In March 2024, final court approval was granted to a $235 million comprehensive settlement with Altria. In the wake of that approval, the San Francisco Unified School District received a substantial $24.65 million payment from both JUUL and Altria, a crucial allocation that promises to transform the district’s health resources. This funding will facilitate the hiring of 76 health professionals, including nurses and counselors, enhancing the district’s ability to support student health and well-being. The earlier phase of the vast litigation saw similar success in late 2022 when JUUL entered into four substantial coordinated settlements with all plaintiff parties.

Led by partner Sarah London, the LCHB team included:
