Ford F-150 Fuel Tank Fires

  • Issue: Straps holding fuel tank break

Ford Fire Risk Investigation

The investigation centers on the steel straps holding the fuel tank and attaching it to the truck frame, saying it “can corrode and break.” If the straps break, the tank might tilt, drop and hit the road, causing a fuel leak. The leaking gasoline can potentially cause a fire, NHTSA said.

To date, the NHTSA has reviewed around 300 complaints of Ford F-150 fuel tank straps rusting and failing, and two reports of fires. 243 of those complaints stated the fuel tank dropped below the vehicle, 95 involved fuel leakages, and nine included reports of sparks from the tank being dragged on the road.

In May 2011, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into 2.7 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks, model years 1997 to 200, due to complaints that the fuel tank straps are prone to rusting and failing.
