Child Seat and High Chair Dangers

  • Issue: Personal injury

Child Seating and High Chair Dangers and Defects

According to a 2003 Consumer Product Safety Commission study, child seating poses many dangers to children. A child may fall backwards out of a high chair, a body part may get caught or cut on a high chair, restraints may fail to secure the child, or the chair may be unstable and lead to tip-overs.

Child and Baby Chair Safety Recalls

  • Graco Children's Products Bumble Bee Toys with Blue Antennae

In January 2004, Graco Children's Products, Inc. of Exton, Pennsylvania, voluntarily recalled about 398,000 Bumble Bee Toys with blue antennae sold with certain Graco high chairs and Graco mobile entertainers, and also sold separately as an accessory and replacement part. The blue antennae on the Bumble Bee toy reportedly could break, posing a choking hazard to young children.

  • Peg Perego USA High Chairs

In July 2001, Peg Perego USA Inc., of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, voluntarily recalled about 325,000 high chairs. When the seat was reclined, the high chairs had a space between the armrest and backrest in which a child's head or arm reportedly could become entrapped, creating a suffocation risk.

  • Graco Highchairs, February 21, 2001

In February 2001, Graco Children's Products Inc., of Elverson, Pa., voluntarily recalled about 860,000 highchairs. The chair's legs could purportedly come out, causing the chair to fall to the ground.

  • Safety 1st Fold-Up Booster Seat, October 10, 2001

In October 2001, Safety 1st, of Canton, Massachusetts voluntarily recalled about 1.5 million Fold-Up Booster Seats, intended for children who could sit unassisted through about 4 years of age. The top half of the seat inserts could purportedly separate, and a child could fall from the chair and be injured.

Legal Rights of the Injured

The law in most states provides individuals with legal claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages.
