Mother Asks FDA Panel To Recall Yaz Birth Control Drug

December 8, 2011

Michelle Pfleger

Testifying before a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee, Joan Cummins called on the committee to recommend that the birth control pill Yaz be recalled. Last year, Cummins’ daughter Michelle Pfleger (pictured above) suddenly died from a blood clot allegedly caused due to her taking Yaz. As found in independent studies, a two to three times greater risk of blood clots exists for women taking birth control drugs containing drospirenone, such as Yaz and Yasmin, than earlier generation birth control drugs that do not contain drospirenone.

Cummins stated, "My daughter was on Yaz. One day she was a healthy eighteen-year-old full of life with a promising future ahead of her, the next she was gone." Read her testimony.
