Mounting Injuries from All-Metal Hip Implants Highlighted by New York Times
October 1, 2011
Yesterday, the New York Times profiled the escalating failure rate of all-metal hip implants and the suffering thousands of Americans are experiencing from faulty metal-on-metal hip implants, which include the DePuy ASR and Zimmer Durom Cup devices. The article noted, "More than a decade ago, some researchers had warned that the hips shed tiny pieces of metallic debris that posed potential health threats to patients. But those warnings were not heeded, and now doctors and patients face a growing public health problem as one of the country’s biggest medical device failures unfolds."
No database in the U.S. exists of hip implant failures. However, a medical group in the United Kingdom earlier this year reported that nearly 50% of the DePuy all-metal ASR hip implant are failing within six years of implantation. Learn more about the DePuy metal hip recall as well as the Zimmer metal implant failures.
