Government Criticizes PG&E Role In San Bruno Gas Explosion

June 10, 2011

An independent panel investigating the September 2010 San Bruno pipeline explosion has released a report criticizing both PG&E and the regulatory agency California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for vast lapses in safety oversight which led to the tragic explosion.

The panel finds PG&E's heavy emphasis on financial gains has affected their safety protocols and led to "slipshod identification of threats along its pipeline system." The panel has also found PG&E to be lax in their data-recording and in their plans for improving the strength and safety of their pipelines in the future. Additionally, the panel finds that CPUC regulators did not have the resources to adequately monitor PG&E's performance in maintaining the safety of its natural gas pipeline systems.

The report recommends that the CPUC order all natural gas pipelines in California to be pressure-tested and replaced if necessary.
