Zimmer Durom Cup Failures
- Issue: Defective artificial hip implant
Zimmer Durom Hip Implant Failures
On July 24, 2008, Zimmer Holdings, the nation's largest producer of orthopedic devices, announced the suspension of sales of an artificial hip implant component due to a high failure rate. The medical device, a hip socket known as the Durom cup, was first sold in the U.S. in 2006 and was implanted in 12,000 patients.

Zimmer Hip Lawsuits - 2012 Update
Lieff Cabraser is serving as co-lead counsel in the federal coordinated In re Zimmer Durom Cup Product Liability mass tort litigation, MDL NO. 2158 (SDW), which is pending in the federal District Court in New Jersey. The patients we represent have filed lawsuits seeking compensation for their pain, suffering, and other physical injuries, cost of replacement surgery and other financial difficulties as a result of the failure of their Zimmer hip implant. The complaints charge that Zimmer concealed from patients and physicians that its Durom hip cup implant was defective.
"Zimmer marketed its ‘metal-on-metal’ Durom Cup implant as providing a greater range of motion and less wear than traditional hip replacement components,” stated Lieff Cabraser attorney Wendy R. Fleishman. “Contrary to Zimmer’s representations, the Durom Cup is prone to failing at an unprecedented rate for these medical devices.”
Update January 9, 2012: We have achieved favorable, confidential settlements for many of our clents in the Zimmer hip litigation.

FDA Safety Alert for All Metal Hip Implants
In February 2011, the Food and Drug Administration stated that there are "unique risks" for "metal-on-metal" artificial hips because tiny metal ions can wear off and damage nearby tissue. Patients who have received all metal implants should be aware of potential symptoms which may occur after surgery and indicate that their device is not functioning properly. Common symptoms may include:
- Pain in the groin, hip or leg
- Swelling at or near the hip joint
- A limp or change in walking ability

Lieff Cabraser's Track Record in Faulty Hip Implant Lawsuits
Lieff Cabraser possesses decades of experience assisting patients in obtaining justice for the injuries they suffered from defective medical devices and products.
In 2001, we helped hundreds of people who were forced to undergo revision surgery to remove defective hip and knee implants manufactured by Sulzer Orthopedics. We played a significant role in negotiating a revised settlement with Sulzer valued at more than $1 billion. The revised settlement, approved by the Court in May 2002, provided patients with defective implants almost twice the cash payment as under an initial settlement which Lieff Cabraser, on behalf of our clients, objected to as insufficient.
We are actively representing clients across America in the Zimmer Durom Cup hip component failure cases and the DePuy ASR hip implant recall litigation.
